Home, Part II

Another version of Singapore’s unofficial national anthem (as covered here previously), this time courtesy of Starhub (local telecoms company).

Oddly, even though they’ve taken care to include verses in Mandarin, Malay and Tamil as well as English, the kid in the intro is – for some reason – speaking with an American accent. Not entirely sure why this should be. Is US considered “standard”? When you speak to regular Singaporeans in the street, their accent is – unsurprisingly – closer to British English. However, preferences vary throughout Asia. Japanese schools prefer teachers with US accents, while Chinese ones tend to prefer British accents.
